Confessions of a man with too much time on his hands! A charming tale of a year in the life of a serial 'pointless project' addict. Written with warmth and depth, interspersed with humorous childhood memories, witty recollections of military service and unorthodox observations on life. Ramble, meander and digress away, discovering non-barking dogs, the secret of excess and places that don't exist. Humiliate ants, get annoyed at goldfish and take up the noble sport of matlepiecing. Go back in time, enjoy biscuits brown, feel the fuzz. Shootings, monkeys, hurricanes and much, much more. Shakespeare? "Shakespeare My Butt!"

Hilarious while you're reading it and for quite a time after. Mr. Donoghue writes in such a relatable way that his stories let you observe the journey and also feel like you're along for the ride. And I learned a thing or two about a thing or two! Even set Kindle highlights along the way so I could reread certain passages and share them with my better half. John Donoghue has both adventurous around-the-world experiences and 'everyday family man' experiences. He deftly manages to blend both into a heartwarming look at his life. I would highly recommend this book and I'm currently about to dive into "Police, Crime & 999" by, you guessed it, John Donoghue!Product details

Shakespeare My Butt edition by John Donoghue Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
A book's plot is what keeps the reader interested... NO! Shakespeare My Butt proves it wrong! No plot there, yet one of the most interesting, funny and witty books I've ever read (trust me, I'm a bookworm). The absence of a plot, along with the wonderful way it's written, makes it impossible to stop turning its pages. Your attention is kept at maximum level because you can't figure out what's next and, once you discover it, it's always something so funny you can't help but reading the page again! (even in your worst days, it's impossible to stifle laughters). Still, among the tasteful and sometimes bittersweet humor, there's a thread that provides insights of the author's life, from his childhood memories to his present days. A confession the author's tweets made me sure I couldn't have been disappointed by this book!
I know it's unusual to read an author's first book last but I'm pleased I did. As a native of County Durham (where quite a lot of the book is set) it all rang quite true to me. From the strange village names (I work near Pity Me) to the evener stranger inhabitants, haha, but I digress.... Please read John's book, it is a collection of his thoughts, experiences and general ramblings but it is really funny. I tend to do most of my reading while travelling to and from work on the bus and with this and his other two books I have received the strangest of looks and questions as to what I was reading as I chuckle to myself on the long journey. You won't be disappointed with any of his books and this is just as laugh out loud funny as the others. On a personal note, in my mind the Angel of the North will forever be known as Kevin.....Thanks John! and of course who could forget Barney.
This is the first book wirtten by John Donoghue but, was the last of his books I read. It had been one of the most entertaining books I have read in a long time. Even though John had described this book to be about his dog, I would say ijt is a bit deeper than that and more about his life with Barney being the constant in it. John's humour and view on nomral everyday events will have you laughing out loud. I have enjoyed reading this book but, as it was the last book of his I read (big hint to you John to write more) I took my time. I felt like a friend was moving away and I didn't wasnt them to go, hanging on to every fun moment with them that I could. You willl not be disappointed in reading this book. It is the best stress reliever at the end of a hard day. Thank you Mr. Donoghue for the laughs and letting your readers have a view of you life.
This was a pure delight! I laughed until tears rolled down my cheeks. If you really want a great summer / winter/ fall or spring read.... buy this book! You wont be sorry! Cant wait to read more from this author. It was that good.
I’ve been neglecting a few things. Personally, I blame John Donoghue. If you doubt how distracting the antics of a front line police officer with a wicked sense of humour can be, check out his reviews. Literally hundreds of people can’t be wrong. Better still, check out Police, Crime & 999 and Police, Lies and Alibis. Both of these books had me crying with laughter. Being a dog-lover and foster mum to a straggle of odd dogs with disabilities ranging from blindness and spinal injuries to missing limbs, I couldn’t resist diving straight into another of his books, Shakespeare My Butt!, which turns around our hero’s first foray into dog-ownership and the arrival in his life of his BFF, Barney. Keen to implement correct dog-training techniques, John’s read the manuals. He’s even created his own list of rules, his Ten Commandments, setting boundaries and reinforcing himself as top dog within the family the dog will see as his ‘pack’. Cue arrival of “rolling, barking, nipping” eating machine that ejects food from one end as fast as it goes in the other. Barney has arrived! He will know his place in the pack hierarchy. He will obey simple, one word commands. Get too verbose and you will confuse him. He’s a dog. Ye-es. No spoilers (I hope) but ‘the surprised’ game in the mornings? The grimace whilst JD and companion search for place name signs? Again, no spoilers, but I am wondering whether the calendar the names would be adorning was actually age appropriate? This is another must-read from Donoghue. A lovely, uniquely witty story of father, daughter (and dog) bonding, with a sprinkling of entertaining historical facts thrown in. Talking of entertainment, how does it work?? The grey elephant thing? I’m still pondering that one.
Would I recommend it? Yes, highly. As usual, John Donoghue had me glued to the pages. The man is pure therapy, I can’t remember laughing so much. I defy anyone, even those with a sense of humour bypass, not to snort wine reading his books. Save time, order a job lot, tuck up and enjoy is my advice.
This author is hilarious ! This is his second book I have read, and he is great ! His humor is something everyone can relate to ! He should be doing stand-up !
For anyone who has ever had a puppy, ths is the book for you. Fall in love with Barney (as if you couldn't). John is a great writer. Makes you wonder if he is filleting his own psychosis or yours, as the reader can identify with amany of his thoughts. Kind of scary. Can't wait for the next adventure. Well done.
