Col. Howard Dunnegan, U.S. Army, Ret., returns. He partners with an Iowa farm foreman. The legendary Army scout and the farmer are in the closing months of terminal cancer. Each has reason to act. A former CIA operative with ties to Windy Goodman and Israel’s Mossad makes their mission happen.
Anyone anywhere is reachable. A caliphate stretching from Damascus to Riyadh is stopped on the eve of its initiation, but not before dampened granules of Cesium 137 settle over Los Angeles and San Francisco. Irradiated, a half million Americans perish. A global payback follows. The gloves off, small tactical nuclear weapons accomplish regime changes. A policy of prevention evolves; the world says “never again.” Future fundamentalist tyrants are hunted before they can achieve power.
Windy Goodman, the elderly presidential advisor, participates as do memorable faces from Dancer’s story. On the rocky shore of Lake Huron in Michigan’s U.P. a former U.S. president speaks about the costs of war. Our country’s saga is about the small lives of those who serve in its battles, not those reading from Tele-prompters seeking glory.
Politicians speak of the courage of our nation’s soldiers from the capitol’s marble-lined corridors. They laud those wounded and use hushed, solemn tones to honor those lost, soldiers who’ve given the ultimate sacrifice. A few, behind the closed doors of committee rooms, beyond the glare of television lights, know the truth. They know, but are powerless to change it. In an ugly repetition of Vietnam’s mistakes, today’s wars are heavily influenced by election cycles and the timidity of our own state department. Too often our troops are prevented from eradicating a festering problem; cannon fodder, too many perish needlessly.
Since 9/11, Homeland Security and NSA’s shadowy super computers have scoured voice and electronic transmissions for keyword references to the Middle East. Perhaps my story set off alarms at the Library of Congress. I think it was the mention of Cesium 137. A retired CIA clandestine operative in his seventies told me about that lethal isotope. A friend who’d read my stories, he may have stepped over a line by telling me; although talking to an author is probably less taboo than a newspaper reporter.
In a sad parallel to my book, the Big C directed his candor, his clock running out. Like my fictional characters Col. Dunnegan and Will Hodge, I know he’d have worn shahidis robes, gladly doing what they did to stop the carnage in the Middle East.
Bravery resides in the souls of unlikely soldiers, and unique fighters like my friend wear a uniform of anonymity, blending in to learn the secrets our enemies hide.

The author's command of descriptive details is impressive. Moreover, his ability to describe experiences that must have been recounted to him rather than experienced by him is amazing. The writing is excellent and the story is captivating.
